Network Design

Networks have evolved from simply connecting computers to a server or peer-to-peer computer connections to integrated technologies. Today's networks support wired and wireless devices:

  • Computers: desktops; laptops; servers; mainframes
  • tablets
  • telephones, both wired and wireless
  • manufacturing equipment
  • consoles

The network infrastructure may run over copper wire in a variety of formats to fibre optic cable, and may be a Local Area Network (LAN) in a single location, or a Wide Area Network (WAN) that can connect multiple facilities across vast distances.

Networks require an assortment of hardware and software that can include:

  • Network Interfaces
  • Repeaters and Hubs
  • Bridges and Switches
  • Routers
  • Modems
  • Firewalls (both hardware and software)
